The MG-TEC IT Academy at Mountain Gateway Community College provides high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a fast-track pathway into high-demand information technology careers. By combining college credit coursework with hands-on certification preparation, MG-TEC equips local youth with job-ready tech skills, industry credentials, and seamless college transfer options prior to high school graduation.

💻 Flexible HyFlex Learning Options

To accommodate varying high school schedules and transportation needs, MG-TEC classes are offered in a HyFlex format:

  • On-Campus: Attend live classes at MGCC’s Clifton Forge campus.
  • Virtual Real-Time: Join live lectures online via Zoom.
  • Asynchronous Online: Complete coursework online independently around your high school schedule.

Three-Year Academy Pathway & Certification Roadmap

Students can enter the academy as sophomores, juniors, or seniors to earn valuable college credits and stackable industry certifications:

🔹 Year One: Computer & Programming Fundamentals (Sophomores)

  • Fall Semester:
    • SDV 101 — Orientation to Information Systems Technology
    • ITP 150 — Python Programming
    • ITE 152 — Intro to Digital & Information Literacy and Computer Applications
  • Spring Semester:
    • ITP 150 — Python Programming (Continuation & Supervised Study)
    • ITE 152 — Digital Literacy & Applications (Continuation)
    • 🎯 Target Certification: PCEP™ (Python Certified Entry-Level Programmer)

🔹 Year Two: Hardware & Networking Infrastructure (Juniors)

  • Fall Semester:
    • ITE 221 — PC Hardware and OS Architecture (Year-Long Course)
    • ITN 101 — Introduction to Networking
  • Spring Semester:
    • ITE 221 — PC Hardware and OS Architecture (Continuation)
    • Comprehensive Industry Certification Prep
    • 🎯 Target Certifications: CompTIA A+ (Core 1 & Core 2), CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCST (Networking)

🔹 Year Three: Cybersecurity, Systems & Help Desk (Seniors)

  • Fall Semester:
    • ITN 260 — Network Security Basics
    • Track Elective (Select One): ITE 180 (Help Desk Support Skills) OR ITN 170 (Linux System Administration)
  • Spring Semester:
    • ITN 261 — Network Attacks, Computer Crime & Hacking
    • Track Elective (Select One): ITE 182 (User Support/Help Desk Principles) OR ITN 257 (Cloud Computing)
    • 🎯 Target Certifications: CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Linux+, CompTIA PenTest+, Cisco CCST (IT Technical Support)
