Commercial Driver's License Program- Class A
The Commercial Driving Program equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Graduates with a Class A CDL have the licensing credential to operate Class 7 and Class 8 commercial motor vehicles, enabling them to transport goods across interstate and interstate roadways.
The entry-level driver training (ELDT) curriculum and behind-the-wheel training exercises ensure that students acquire the essential knowledge and foundation needed for successful careers in the transportation industry. The comprehensive coursework covers a range of topics, including:
- Vehicle Inspection and Preventative Maintenance
- Loading, Securing, Unloading, and Documenting Cargo
- Vehicle Management Systems (electrical, transmission, steering, suspension, and air brakes)
- Types of Tractors, Trailers, and Specialized Rigs
- Coupling and Uncoupling Combination Vehicles
- Hours of Service and Driver Log Book
- Accident Prevention, Driver Challenges, and Safe Driver Behavior
- Driving Techniques, Skid Control, and Recovery
- Backing and Trailer Articulation
Upon successful completion of this ELDT coursework, demonstrating proficiency in behind-the-wheel road/range exercises, and passing a state-administered practical exam, students will receive the following state credential and program achievement certificates:
- A state-issued Class A Commercial Driver’s License
- ELDT Theory Certificate
- ELDT Behind-the-Wheel Certificate
- Program Completion Certificate
Trainee Requirement Details
The coursework includes 40-hours of training and 3 hours of skills testing, including:
- 8 hours of classroom instruction
- 32 hours of behind-the-wheel training exercises
- An option to acquire additional hours, if needed
All CDL applicants must be at least 18 years of age, possess a valid DOT Medical Card, and hold a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) before beginning the behind-the-wheel portion of their training.
