Industrial Maintenance Mechanic (IMM) Levels 1-4 (NCCER)

General Information

Wherever there are machines, there will be a need for maintenance workers to keep them running. Now more than ever, companies have a critical need for skilled and knowledgeable technicians that can run, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment and facilities. Industrial maintenance mechanics receive multi-craft training to install and maintain industrial machines and service mechanical equipment. This a four-level program covering topics from hand tools through troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing industrial machinery to help you become a professional multi-craft mechanic.

This program provides four levels of training designed by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and complies with and complies with the DOL standards for related technical instruction in registered apprenticeships.

  • IMM Level 1 introduces the industrial maintenance mechanic craft with topics in Orientation to the Trade, Tools of the Trade, Fasteners and Anchors, Oxyfuel Cutting, Gaskets and Packing, Craft-Related Mathematics, Construction Drawings, Pumps and Drivers, Valves, Introduction to Test Instruments, Material Handling and Hand Rigging, Mobile and Support Equipment, and Lubrication. Pre/co-requisite: NCCER Core Curriculum.
  • IMM Level 2 addresses Basic Layout, Introduction to Piping Components, Copper and Plastic Piping Practices, Identifying, Installing and Maintaining Valves, Hydrostatic & Pneumatic Testing, Introduction to Bearings, Low-Pressure Steam Systems, High Pressure Steam Systems and Auxiliaries, Introduction to Tube Work, Introduction to Ferrous Metal Piping Practices, Distillation Towers and Vessels, Heaters, Furnaces, Heat Exchangers, Cooling Towers, and Fin Fans.  Prerequisite: IMM Level 1.
  • IMM Level 3 focuses on Precision Measuring Tools, Advanced Trade Math, Installing Bearings, Installing Couplings, Installing Belt and Chain Drives, Setting Baseplates and Prealignment, Conventional Alignment, and Installing Mechanical Seals. Prerequisite: IMM Level 2.
  • IMM Level 4 covers Preventive and Predictive Maintenance, Advanced Blueprint Reading, Compressors and Pneumatic Systems, Reverse Alignment, Laser Alignment, Introduction to Supervisory Skills, Troubleshooting and Repairing Pumps, Troubleshooting and Repairing Gearboxes, Advanced Towers and Vessels, and Troubleshooting and Repairing Conveyors. Prerequisite: IMM Level 3.

 

Trainee Requirement Details

Each level provides up to 80 hours of classroom/lab training with online homework and activities to be completed outside of class. Textbooks, online access code, and all materials are included in tuition. Computer/tablet and internet access are required for homework completion. Eighth-grade competence in reading and mathematics is recommended. Students must have completed or be concurrently enrolled in NCCER Core Curriculum.

 

FastForward Financial Assistance Available 

Qualifying Virginia residents may be eligible for FastForward financial assistance, which could reduce the cost of tuition by two-thirds.
