Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC) President Dr. John Rainone announced that the TRIO Educational Talent Search program has been awarded a five-year, $1.8 million federal grant renewal to continue its work in the region.
Out of 512 existing Talent Search programs nationwide, the TRIO program at MGCC was one of only 326 selected in a highly competitive federal application process. Established under the Higher Education Act of 1965 and operating at MGCC since 1980, the program assists potential first-generation college students in overcoming obstacles to post-secondary education.
"Securing this competitive federal funding is a powerful endorsement of our staff’s dedication and the profound impact this program has had on our region for decades," said Dr. John Rainone, President of Mountain Gateway Community College. "This $1.8 million grant allows TRIO to continue opening doors for our local youth, ensuring that every student with the desire to pursue higher education has the support and resources needed to reach their full potential."

The program serves students and families in Alleghany, Bath, and Rockbridge counties, as well as the cities of Lexington, Buena Vista, and Covington. Key support services include:
